Variants and variant values are used in Author-it to generate facets and facet values on the Fluid Topics portal for your documentation.
Variants are used when you need to maintain multiple adaptations of your content based on different criteria. For example, adaptations based on location (country or state), product, platform, and so on. You can have multiple variants active at any one time. For example, you can have three variants of a topic in a book, and the one that is used at any time depends on the specific filter. You also use variants of embedded topics to add "conditional text" to a topic.
Variant objects are linked to a book through their primary object. The primary objects are swapped with the appropriate variants when you filter or publish the book.
Variants are used by Fluid Topics to generate Facets. For example, the ProductVersion variant will generate the ProductVersion facet and all variant values will generate facets values.
- Variant values
Variant values are used to add criteria to a variant. For example, the values of the ProductVersion variant may be v2, v5.6, Version 7.8, and so on. Variant values will ultimately differentiate one topic or book from its varianted version. The same book can thus be modified to reflect new features from the latest version.
In the following Fluid Topics portal example, facets (variants) are displayed in blue, and
facet values (variant values) are in black:
- Create variants and variant values.
- Apply variant values to content.
