The goal is to organize facet values according to the following hierarchy:

  • Transportation
    • Cars
      • City Cars
      • Crossover SUVs
    • Boats
      • Unpowered Boats
      • Sailboats
    • Aircraft

The following table shows which terms must be the generic and which ones must be specific to be able to create a hierarchy:

Generic term Specific terms

Crossover SUVs

Boats

Unpowered Boats

Sailboats

Aircraft

Balloons

Jet Aircraft

Note: To learn more about taxonomies, consult the Understand Linguistics in Fluid Topics documentation.

The first step is to define generic terms.

Click on NEW TERM to enter the generic terms: Cars, Boats, and Aircraft. Enter the term Cars. Click on SAVE AND NEW to add Boats and Aircraft. Click on SAVE to save all added terms.

Generic terms are defined and displayed in the vocabulary.

The next step is to define specific terms for each generic term.

In the Vocabulary interface of the Back Office, select a blue arrow.

Blue arrows are used to create specific terms for generic terms
Click on the Cars term’s blue arrow in the subclass_hierarchy vocabulary, to be able to create specific terms for it.

The – currently empty – list of the terms defined under "Cars" term is displayed.

Click on NEW TERM and enter the term City Cars, as City Cars is a subclass of Cars.

Note: In Fluid Topics versions from 3.4.4, it is possible to apply various enrichments on a same metadata element with the Enrich and Clean feature at the same time. For instance, it is possible to apply two vocabularies on the subclass metadata element:
  • A synonym vocabulary to clean spelling inconsistencies
  • A taxonomy vocabulary to get a hierarchical categorization
Click on SAVE AND NEW to add further terms. Type in Crossover SUVs. Click on SAVE to save the last specific term. Click on Root to go back to the list of terms present in the vocabulary.

Root button gives access to the taxonomy's list of terms

Repeat Steps 1 to 6 to define specific terms for Boats and Aircraft as follows:
  • Boats → Unpowered Boats and Saiboats
  • Aircraft → Balloons and Jet Aircraft

The vocabulary named subclass_hierarchy has nine terms: three generic terms having two specific terms each.
