Taxonomies define hierarchy between terms, like transport > car > SUV, where every term of the hierarchy can have one or more synonyms as well.

Example

If "car" and "motorcycle" are defined as specific terms relative to the generic term "means of transportation", the query "means of transportation" matches documents containing "car", but also those containing "motorcycling" (i.e. descendant autoposting mechanism is used to widen users' searches).
Taxonomies in the indexing process

In return, a query "motorcycle" does not match documents containing "means of transportation" but only the ones containing "motorcycle" (i.e. ascendant autoposting mechanism is used to widen users' searches).
